Total ascent from GPS data
I’ve just got a palm PC, with windows mobile and memory map installed on it. I’ve uploaded GPS tracks into memory map and on my PC, and also converted the files into GPX format and viewed them with Google Earth. What I can’t manage to do though, is work out the total ascent on a run! Memory map will display an elevation profile, but I’ve not got the time to add up all the individual rises nor will it be as accurate.
Does anybody have some kind of simple programme that will take a GPX or memory map overlay file and calculate the total ascent? It doesn’t seem that hard a thing to do, although it probably wouldn’t be particularly useful to non fell runners.

Try map my run it has an import gpx feature.
Re: Total ascent from GPS data
In MM convert from route to track (or otherway round) and then right click on the route and select properties and this gives you the total elevation info.

Ah.....that seems to work! Anybody know how to configure memory map to use more data points when recording with GPS? It seems to be squaring off a lot of the bends...

Oh, hang on, it does bring up the catogory 'total ascent', but it's just zero.
Not sure if the fact that I've only got a 1:50 map and not a 1:25 one makes a difference to altitude data.....I thought the raw GPS data included an altitude component (as opposed to the mapping software working it out from position on the map).
Re: Total ascent from GPS data
Scale should not matter. I use the altitude from SportsTracks but the GPX import to MM and convert to route gives similar data.
Re: Total ascent from GPS data
AG, I have memory map and its great for many things, but not for calculating total ascent.
Use the sportracks program mentioned above and set the program to take the points at say every 25 sec (if its set too little time then it exagerates the ascent).
Garmin exagerates ascent greatly.
Today's run came out at 3600ft ascent (25 sec intervals) in Sportracks but Garmin said it was 4952ft!
I have attached the sportracks screenshot for ascent.
Can't work out how to calculate ascent in mm (but can view profile).

Image didn't upload, here is another attempt.
Re: Total ascent from GPS data
Cheers BJ, that works!
All I need is a total distance/total time for each run, so I can do that by:
Uploading memory map file from PDA to PC.
Once in memory map, convert to GPS format.
Use sport trax to calculate ascent.
A bit of a pain, but problem solved!
