if you go to a gym get on the stair master (take big steps not short quick ones like most folk do) or even cross trainer but legs only. It's Quite close to the climbing involved in fell running.
Sometimes those are the only things I can manage through the week and have worked well for me.

Sense of humour is all in order, everything else in good time..!!
I'll be doing the valley plod, searching out a local gym with a step machine & keep putting the miles in on the downs.

we'll maybe see you there mattg01 me and my mate have just just commited to the bowfell class on our first mm too. :)

you'll enjoy it, did my first one last year. I now live down south but found a few trips north and plenty of mileage in the Chilterns was more than enough to get round comfortably.
its not the distance per se thats the problem if you live in 'non fell' areas but the navigation!!
