To put the record straight...
I'm getting a lot of comments that I ate too much sweet stuff and that I was eating sickly gels and drinking double strenth Lucozade.
This is what happened:
I felt sick from the start and struggled to eat anything. As I came off Skiddaw I started to get stomach cramps and had to go to the toilet on the climb up Great Calva. I took Colofac as I thought it might be IBS. The Colofac had no effect and the stomach cramps became increasingly frequent and painful and I started suffering from bad wind. On the road out of Threlkeld severe diarrhoea started. I had to go at least 10 times climbing Clough Head, and continued to have repeated bouts on every climb.
On leg one I ate one piece of milk chocolate, one tiny crunchy about the size of my thumb, two squirms and two Worthers Originals. I had one mouthful of Lucozade, possibly two, and drank a bottle of water which Yiannis was drip feeding me.
At Threlkeld I had two mouthfuls of soup and a small amount of tea, that was all I could get down.
On leg 2 I sipped water, and ate nothing. When the water ran out I had Nuun but at this point the symptoms worsened and I realised the water was passing straight through. I was in trouble and made the decision to get off the hill and let Andrew continue without me. We weren't far off schedule and he still had a good chance.
It was humiliating and distressing and I felt exposed and dirty. My team were amazing. They supported me, encouraged me, put layers on me, and got me to safety. I will never forget the kindness I recieved.
The symproms continued for 24 hours and the landlady at the B&B called for medical advice. It is thought I had a stomach bug.
Fingers crossed for next time.
