Anyone having a go this year? I've not done it before but fancy a steady run / walk round

Hello DT
I did this one last year - a bit of road, but generally a great route. Plenty of stuff to scoff on the way so don't worry about taking much.
Should be good - provided I'm not needed for a friends 'Joss Naylor'; see you there.
I am doing this again after my dismal performance last year.
Say hello to Marko won't you - I think he's doing it too.;).
I'm in for sure - my local fave event. I'm hoping to recce the second half this Sunday if I get back to blighty as planned on Saturday (I'm sending this from Sao Paolo - and no, it's not a holiday, just in case you were wondering :-)
Yep, i'm in. Absolutely cacking it though, as its way further than anything i've done before! I shall just be concentrating on finishing and not getting lost.
I'm in. Longest race i've done too, but can't wait. Been reccying the course over the last few weeks so navigation shouldn't be a problem for once.
Good evening, doing the race with some mates in the hope of doing the tmb next year.
Could any-one help and tell me exactly which maps we need for the bullock smithy - cheers, simon
Is it too late to enter?
Entry's on the day...........
Hmmm....
I thought it was OL1 Dark Peak that covered most the route?
your need the white peak for the peak forest, chlemorton, branside etc
Thanks guys, will purchase both.
simon
I think you need OS Explorer 268 as well for the far western section of the route.
The fact you need 3 OS Maps has made me realise just how long this race is!
Right. Think I'm up for this. That's if I can get these blinkin' maps marked up in time:eek:.
Bloody hell. Still at it:eek:.
I hope you got the maps marked in the end, Grouse.
Marko, the forecast doesn't look that bad considering the filth that's due to pass through on Friday night. As long as that gets out of the way by 12:00 on Saturday, we should only have light showers at worst if the BBC is to be believed. Look on the bright side - we might just get lucky. ;)
How picky are they on kit - do they check for taped seams - will pertex do? Would a helly hansesn constitiute a 'spare sweater'? How much food/liquid do you carry? Come on Marko, spill the beans, you talked me into this. :D
Trail shoes or road?
Not terribly picky - no - just about (but it looks likely to rain!). Yes. There is always plenty of food/drink at checkpoints except for the first one (drinks only) and Edale Cross (middle of nowhere). So if you can get by on water/squash/tea/sandwiches/fruit/biscuits/rice pud/etc, you won't need to carry anything.
Trail shoes...
HTH, Steve
Thanks Steve.
HTBH
;)
I gave up marking up the route based on the route description. I think I'll wing it, but if the weather is bad I'll may take some tarmac detours ;)
Good. I'm glad it's not just me winging it. If I thought I could keep up with him, I'd follow Marko. :D
Ha just got it Daz.
Doh:rolleyes:!
Well, Marko that wasn't such a dismal performance! Well done! Really enjoyed this, despite losing lots of time through one bad route choice - recces definitely in order for next year. Well organised with different types of foods at each CP. Thanks to the organisers!
Does that mean that MarkO won? I'm struggling a bit with the results.
If so - well done Mark!
Well done marko. Top performance! 56-plus miles of "canyoning" in 9:36
I guess that means you finished in the dry then?
It might have been swilling underfoot but I reckon we did hit it lucky with the weather - sunshine on Saturday and only a few showers after dark (at least until I finished).
Well done to all who finished and commiserations to those who didn't. Try again next year; the weather's usually great at this time of year
Anyone else doing this?
Picked a flier for it yesterday and have spent several hours sussing out the route. Do you really go on the road so much? Especially between Peak Forest and MIller's Dale - route shows it down the road, but there looks to be a path going down Dam Dale, Hay Dale, Peter Dale and Monk's Dale. Is it not very easy to run on?
Also heard the food is not brilliant on this one. What does it compare with? Worth actually eating some of the stuff I carry round for weeks on end without ever touching it? (Not sure I'd want to eat it now actually except in an emergency :D)
Route choice depends on your approach. If you are going for a fast time then take road from Peak Forest SE and take footpath rt. on bend. This goes across fields to join lane. Down this into Wheston and left at junc. then right along Limestone Way which leads strt into Millars Dale. The road bit isn't that bad (v. quiet) and Wheston is a village from the past. The track down to M. Dale is a delight (but watch out for angry farmers). The Dales route is one for purists and personally I would want to savour it for a more relaxed outing rather than a challenge event.
cheers.
I would say the food is excellent - something different at each CP, e.g. jam doughnuts, crisps.
Got this one on the radar not decided yet though, know a couple of guys at work who have done it and raved about it.
What is the date this year? 5th Sept?
Been planning this one all year but yet to do my homework on the details! Another fella from Macc planning to re-do it after finding it a LONG day last year  (he seems to have unfinished business) and I have heard several people say you'll not regret doing it... roll on September.
Excellent website giving lots of info and aerial videos of the suggested route. http://www.bullocksmithy.com/
I did it last year and totally rocked my world. Definitely doing it again.
pleasantly surprised to see a thread for this one, as I recce'd a section last Saturday! (Brand Top to Walker Barn)
I know a lot of Stockport Harriers who swear by this event, and am keen to give it a go (although this year may be too soon)
the route itself is an absolute work of genius and just DEMANDS to be done
also, I was born in Stepping Hill hospital, which is just up the road from the Hazel Grove start/finish, so I think it's pretty much compulsory that I do it at some point... :o
