Interesting name DLM - are you sure you are new to the forum?!!!!
Is this the race you are interested in?

definatley new but do look at the forum often, have been watching for a thread for the rombalds stride, the 25mile version.
Mud...
The Rombalds Stride event always attracts a lot of entrants - improbable as it seems, think 'hundreds' rather than 'dozens'. In fact, the first problem can be managing to get a parking space, as there are bouncers who guard the Aireborough Leisure Centre carparks to prevent any Rombalds Striders from using them. Because of the size of field, and because many entrants are walkers, there's no need to worry about coming last. If you've entered, you ought to have received details of the course. Basically, it goes from Guiseley through the woods to Esholt, skirts Baildon, crosses Rombalds Moor to Ilkley, and returns via Burley Woodhead, Menston and Otley Chevin. Let me know if you need any further details and I'll be glad to help. I did it a couple of years ago and am scheduled to do it again this year.
cheers tussockface, as for not liking mud that's the brown sloppy stuff, i actually like the group.
DLM Think the runners field is usually limited to 400. Not sure how many walkers take part. The checkpoints are fabulous, lovely cakes!!!
Ran the course from Weechers res yesterday, it's in pretty good nick after Whetstonegate. Up to Whetstonegate from Weechers it's the usual gloop.
Great event though.
BTW Wouldn't want to start any arguments, but altough the course is down as 25 miles, Id say it's closer to 21 ...ish.
Plenty of parking at Morrisons across the A65 ,two min walk from the school.
" Really love those Tiger Feet"
Great weather for the Rombalds Stride today. If anything, it was probably a bit too hot.
I failed yet again in my attempts to win this, but with Lee Athersmith running, I was never likely to be first back. Lee finished in around 2:35, but would have been quicker if he'd known the route and hadn't had to keep slowing down for Richard Pattinson to show him the way! I was third, thanks to knowing the route better than Graham Pearce, who I think would have beaten me if he hadn't gone off course.
How did everyone else get on?
Well done Rombald. Third sounds fantastic. Looked a brilliant day for it - where did all that sunshine come from? Brill! I was enviously looking out of the window, saving myself for night orienteering later.
Thanks socks. The sunshine surprised me as well - shame it will be dark when you are out! It was also nice and calm, with none of the wind that we seem to have been battling against for the past two or three months.
Weather wise it was nice. The forest was a bit brambly though. (and I went a very long way round to get to one of the controls!)
Bit of a step up for me first run over thirteen miles I've done in months.
Cracking day though and cracking route, twenty minutes slower than last time I ran it:(
I'll get fit eventually won't I?
Well done to all forumites who completed the Stride. Superb conditions, although it was still pretty muddy across to Whetstone Gate from the Lanshaw Lad. I managed 84 seconds slower than when I last ran it, two years ago, but it's now slightly longer with the second Baildon Moor checkpoint having been put in to enforce better discipline over the golf course.
And does ANYONE manage a good line from the Chevin self clip to the quarry?!?
I always finish up doing a very steep and unnecessary ascent and have to drop down to the path I should have been on. Perhaps I'll be organised one year and do a recce...
BTW, a Baildon lady who finished with me Gamined the course at 21 miles rather than 25. Not that we care. It still hurts.
I've done it loads of times, and that sounds like the route I take. A scramble up through the rocks and then later dropping down onto the path that leads to the Quarry checkpoint.
Yeah, it's definitely less than 25. I reckon between 21.5 and 22, depending on the lines taken. (Of course, it is possible to make it further!) My legs are a bit sore today as well.
Who is up for this?
Not sure if this is the right section for this post, I know it's only 25 miles, but it's not really a race either.
Certainly will be a long distance challenge for me!
I reckon I'm up for it. Mostly runnable, though the final climb up on to the Chevin at about 20+ miles is probably walked by most.
Worth recceing from leaving Ilkley Moor through Menston to the Chevin.
Thanks someone else has given the same advice. Assume that trail shoes will be best and do you need to carry any food apart from the mandatory emergency stuff?
Yes, trail shoes will be fine, apart from the climb up to the Chevin it is all reasonable angled slopes, could be muddy for parts like along the top of Ilkley Moor.
From memory, there are food (biscuit) and water stations just before and after Ilkley Moor.
I did 3hr 39 last time so will try to beat that
They've always had buns when I've done it. Plain buns with a blob of icing on the top. Go down a treat when you're running. I've never taken anything else to eat. (The icing blobs are white, yellow and pink I think!)
Just wear sunglasses Dom (or coloured contact lenses) and they'll look a different colour :)
Hi Guys
Newbie to the FRA forums but enjoy lots of LDWA challenge events. Am looking forward to doing this one again, I just wondered does anyone know of anyone who is unable to partake but has an entry? If they would consider transferring it, we would reimburse you and be extremely grateful. My friend really wants to do it (after hearing me go on and on about it), but has missed the entry deadline.
Thanks :)
I did this 2 years ago , cracking run and good scoff afterwards. I'll be doing with my dog , weather permitting her doing it. i will anyway. That climb up the chevin is a swine!!!!!
Does anyone know if there is mandatory kit for this event?
Mind you, the way things are at the moment round here, double full body cover is in order along with some lead weights to stop you blowing away
I'm in, hoping to finish this time after last years early bath due to injury.
As always I'm the one in the Marmite top .
P S Don't forget your snowshoes :D
The kit list seemed advisory rather than mandatory. However I think that we might be starting out in full gear anyway.
Walked the climb up the Chevin a week or so ago and it was very, very greasy.
See everyone bright and early on Saturday.
What time is registering from again?
0730 to 0830 the event starts at 0900.
Just looked at the forecast and it says light snow and -2 degrees at 0900.
Looking forward to it! It's fairly ironic that, of all the LDWA events I do, this one is the closest to where I live, and it has the latest start time. It's a lie in!!! Hope the wind's not too bad on the moor - could be a trifle nippy!
Cheers wycoller. I'll be there. No need for a kit check for me , i'll definately be packing it.
My entry is still free to anyone who wants it and can take it up - too poorly to go out. Guiseley.
Bugger. Just found out about this event - I live in Ilkley and have been wanting to get involved in racing for a while. I guess I need to get off my a**e and join a club so these things don't pass me by! That or visit the forum a bit more often.
Anyway, had a fantastic run this morning on the other side of Wharfedale - mine were the first footsteps in the snow which is always good; met a forumite and his dog along the way too (hi Guick Dotto). There was a very nasty looking cloud coming down into the valley over Ilkley moor when I was on my way back down - hope it wasn't too grim up there for you all!
It was horrible out there today! I've been struggling with injury for a few weeks so wasn't expecting to have a great run anyway, but I found the underfoot conditions really difficult, especially between Weecher and Burley Woodhead.
I thought I knew the route perfectly, but the covering of snow meant that I made of mess of getting from Baildon Moor trig point to the next checkpoint at the cattle grid. Serves me right for feeling smug as I watched the leaders going a longer way down from the trig point than they had to do!
Once past Burley Woodhead it was easier and I managed to get my head round picking up the pace a bit again.
It started snowing quite hard just after I went through the Surprise View car park so I was glad I was nearly finished by then.
How did everyone else get on?
That felt hard  Again pretty steady until Menston then it was just a case of hanging in there. I ran the whole race in a lined top and didn't feel like I was overheating except in the wooded section on the Chevin.
Some of the showers were a bit nasty - I really felt for those in shorts!
