Up the lane at the back of the Druid then sharp right when you run out of lane - steep 80 yards then turn left and follow path south westwards until you reach a point due south of Fron Heulog. Turn right by Clwyd Nurseries (a plantation not a garden centre!) then up Foel Fenlli as far as the ramparts, round the top clockwise and then drop down a bit on the west side to climb back up the steps then back home again. The organiser is away until next week so I'm going to go round at the weekend on his behalf to look for any new hazards.
Thanks very much Welsh Harrier, I may be forced to take an early morning stroll up that way.
Looking on the OS 1:25 map, there is a footpath going part of the way up Foel Fenlli following a wall part of the way then turning up the slope and another marked path going straight up. Is this straight path the way up/down?

You've got it - the path that heads directly for the cairn is the one - you turn left at the rampartsgo clockwise round til 10 o'clock then drop down halfway to the road in a north east direction then hit the marked path up to the cairn before dropping back onto the downward path.
Thanks again, I've got it now, just checked out Flashearth and picked up the paths you mentioned. I'll have a run up there over the next few days to see it in the flesh.
I went round The Druid & Hotfoot up Fammau last night & the only thing that could be construed as anything approaching a hazard is the gate with barbed wire on top half-way round the route. Last year was a bit of a haze & I can't remember if this gate was marshalled.
I'm really looking forward to the series & this race is a cracking wee opener.
I did this race last year and it was my first fell race. I had the mishap of coming out of the woods not to far after the start and slipped losing my footing and took a tumble down through the bracken. I did carry on and complete it although it was a struggle. Doing it again this year and looking forward to it. Hopefully in a much better time and state. This is a good race to do.
This is in my club's fell championship this year, so I'm hoping to make it along
Just come back from a trip up Foel Fenlli in my new PB's (can't turn up at a race with shiny new shoes could I?), they are now well and truely caked in mud and cow muck. The section through the trees is a bit muddy...and trying to get past a couple of dozen cows/young bulls who were hiding in there and didn't want to budge was a bit tricky. Got a bit misty up near the top but otherwise good. Got stung to buggery though, don't know by what, I can't remember running through a field of knee high nettles. :(
The wife and I had a gentle run around the course last night - very muddy indeed, esp through the 'woods of doom' (wifeism, but she has a point as they are very dark).
Will be going round at threequarter speed on Weds as the BG is just over a week away but i can't resist this smashing summer race series.
See you there
THere's loads of studmarks up there already on last night's evidence :)
Hope these pesky showers go, it's a lovely route!
Mrs ST will be taking a rare outing on the fells. Last time she ran on the fells, someone gave her a fish at the end. She'll be expecting a druid related momento this time perhaps? I keep telling her that fellrunning isn't like her beloved road running where you get a T shirt, medal or similar just for turning up, but she keeps getting stuff, or worse, winning prizes (first, last and only lady at Alwinton 2 years ago!).
Any ideas for Druid related things i can get for her, or perhaps we should settle on a pint from the pub?

Really enjoyed this. First attempt at 5.45pm in 68 minutes.
Second attempt in the race at 7.30pm in 46.57.
Saw Fellrunner on first attempt and his back on the second! He won in 44.56 I think.
Nice to meet Swiss Toni again and his charming wife who made we work very hard!
Thanks to John Linley and Martin "Welsh Harrier" Cortvriend and all their helpers.
Excellent race - thanks to all concerned. The Druid is one of our favourite "stopping off" pubs so it was nice to find out what's behind it.
Great race - thanks to John and Martin
Enjoyed my bimble round, apart from the 2 toilet stops, in a 4 mile race I ask you! THat prawn curry the night before was a bad idea
Mrs ST enjoyed it too, possibly because it has at least some road in it.
GOod to see Fellrunner and Swoop again.

I know BG support teams go cater for every need, but you know him better than I do
Shit Man!!!!
Thats a lot to carry.
This threads going the same way as my Vitamin C thread.
It wasn't so pants was it - well done, just outside your own record. Presumably the get fit fast programme is to prepare for some Mercia initiation ceremony! Good new runner from Eryri not far behind you!
Great run from Anna - exactly 6 minutes off the ladies record. Well done everyone else except the fellow called Chris who ticked the female box on his entry form causing some consternation among the ladies looking at the results board. See you in 2 weeks!
This may be the secret recipe that I need to make me run faster. Forget the flapjack and jelly babies...just mark all the suitable areas of cover on the map and then sprint like mad from one to the next. I might lose some weight and get that "athletic" fellrunner physique too. :D
Cheers John & Martin, I didn't have to open any gates this year thanks to all your supportive marshalls, thoroughly enjoyed my run although Rob made sure I had to run harder than I would've liked.
Great to have Frosty there. I'm just a Joey Jogger who puts in a few miles compared to Anna whose classy win at the uphill trials shows what a cracking runner she is. Great to have athletes like that taking part in this fantastic series. Shame we can't entice any top male runners along to firmly put me in my place.....maybe Jackie will let her bloke out to play in a fortnight.
Is this going to be ST's new persona? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's.....:D
Good to see you're taking all this so well ST. Would have been so easy to be down in the dumps after all those problems. :)
It was Chris from Wrexham not Chris from Shotton - does that exclude you Hairy Legs?
Results are now at www.wfra.org.uk
Next race in the Clwydian Summer Trots series is Hotfoot up Famau on 4th July (for some reason it says 4th June on the website). Prawn curry the night before is compulsory for all runners (was it a takeaway ST - if so let me know where and I can bulk order!)
No, it was my wife's cooking.
Oops.
Wednesday 18 June - The Druid Fell Race AS 5M/1200ft
from the Druid Inn, Llanferres (on A494 West of Mold) GR188605
Race 1 of the Clwydian Trots
7.30pm £3.00 on the night.
I will be along with the camera on this one.
It's a Tattenhall club fell championship counter so we'll be there en masse. Summer has truly arrived when these 3 races are upon us - marvellous :)
