Re: anyone swum Wast Water ?
Open 24 2 years ago we had to swim across having traveresed along under the screes from the south. Knowing it was coming my partner and myself took flipers which helped a lot but we did have to cycle with them for 8 hours. I will say it is cold but nothing like as cold as Loch Morar where we had an acidental swim while kayaking.

Re: anyone swum Wast Water ?
Had a swin in Wast Water on my stag do, I noticed that the top metre or so seemed okay but if you dropped you legs down the water underneath was freezing, not sure if this is from the sun heating the water on the surface ??
Re: anyone swum Wast Water ?
those divers look pretty well insured against cold !
definately the full gimp suit and hat(s) for my swim.
tis the most beautiful corner of the L District, but also the most savagely menacing at times
I'm sure the lake will mirror this...think it's c.80m ( unlike some Loch's @200m ) deep so probably some noticeable currents from convection
except for the superficial solarised surface, temperature 'contours' will radiate out from the centre of the lake making it most dangerous in the middle ( or slightly skewed over to the screes as I reckon it dives deeply to its glacial bottom there ), above its deepest reaches...which is why many a summer swimmer only get into trouble and die when 'out of their depth' unfortunately. Atleast that's my understanding
i guess it's like the risk of exposure correlating to altitude contours on land
