    Hi,

Cumberland fell runners arrange some very good short handicap races, that are a good introduction to what its all about, with well marked courses around the Dent area.
These aside, there is a normal un-handicapped race in our area called Blakes heaven on the 30th Jan about 4.5 mile with 1700ft of ascent that sets off from Lamplugh village green

my favourite run is a 5 mile circle alongisde loweswater, carling knott and blake fell using the coffin road.

Start at fang's brow and turn left down the hill over a stile. Follow the track down turning right to hudson place farm. Thru the farm and along the side of the lake thru the woods. Past wategate farm (the nat trust warden's hse) and along to maggies bridge. Turn right after the car park and go up to high nook farm. Thru the farm and follow the trail up the hill into the corner of the valley, then it turn's back on itself to climb back to fang's brow above the woods. The views on this section are particularly good.

More of a trail run but tis lovely. A good place to start. About 5.25 miles.

You are all really kind - this is very good information and advice. I've got a good list now of places to start out in - have already had a pop at the Loweswater coffin road route and found it good. All this will definitely help beat the post-Christmas lethargy!

Can I make a few more suggestions for shortish runs near Loweswater (as someone relatively new to fell running who lives in Cockermouth). These are all runs I do on a fairly regular basis.

(a bit nearer Cockermouth this one, and one of my most regular runs) Sale Fell - from the road between Wythop Mill and The Pheasant Inn - there's a very nice 3 mile loop which you can do as many times as you like.

Lords Seat - from Whinlatter, mostly on forest tracks, but you can carry on over the fells behinds Lords Seat (Broom Fell etc) and come back down onto the tracks.

Also at Whinlatter, the North and South Loop Mountain Bike trails make for very good running routes in foul weather at quiet times (fairly sheltered and no navigation worries) - just don't do them at peak times, as you'll p1ss off the bikers!

Low Fell (up and down from Thackthwaite)

Mellbreak or Hen Combe - same for both - from Kirkstile Inn, run along the track up the valley between the two, steep up the far (south) end, along the top and then down the front (north) end.

From the road between High Swinside Farm and Blaze Bridge - up onto the ridge and follow it over Ladyside Pike to the top of Hopegill Head + back down again.

From Lanthwaite Green, up Gasgale Gill (take care as the recent floods have washed away huge chunks of the path along here) to Coledale Hause, then up to Hopegill Head (and maybe Grisdale Pike) and back along Whiteside and back down (steep but very enjoyable descent!).

Hope this gives you a few more options!
