I stayed in carnford b&b ( i think it was called)

5-10 minutes walk from the moot hall.

Very nice people, beltin breakfast and you get an outside key so no curfew.

It was £27 for one night, not sure if it goes down when you stay for more.

    I Recommend them!

Youth Hostel always a good bet ! or if you do camping, Dale Bottom just outside Keswick is a handy spot.

Car - you have a Car! I'd walk up to Lakes during the week and IF I WAS LUCKY find an old piece of chip paper for a blanket and sleep on a bench in Fitz Park and then run the BG in my grandads old clogs that got handed down to me.

I used keswick YHA a lot and it was fine, although often i was up and out too early for breakfast (but still had to pay for it), but it was about 18 quid a night. I asked for a room to myself cos i was out early and they almost always managed to find me one.
