I'm after a good solid smock or jacket for when out on thills. Doesn't need to be an out an out waterproof, just need it to be wind and shower proof and not have a fit that makes it a windsock

what sort of runs are you doing short or long it does make a difference if your out for hours you would be better of going for waterproof rather than just wind and shower why i say this is i ended up buying ten before getting the right one for distance (montane minimus) if its for short runs (montane windshell) but some may disagree but these fit me perfectly
Lots of differing distances really, but nothing over marathon distance at mo. I've already got 2 Haglofs paclite tops and am after something that would get me through windy squally conditions without having to put my haglofs on.

or for a heavierweight version, with or without a hood http://www.haglofs.com/en-US/products/clothing/activities/intense/men
Usual Haglofs Quality and fit.
For conditions as you describe I love my Montane featherlite smock. It's insanely light and keeps howling wind and drizzly clouds at bay. It's NOT waterproof but is windproof, water resistant and highly breathable. I think you would struggle to get much better. Price is nice too.

this is what I use on virtually all runs now. I even go out in it in the rain and it performs really well in everything including short runs in torrential rain. only time I've felt like putting on a fully windproof layer was in 40mph wind up on top of Bleaklow, but i didn't and because I was still running I didn't actually get cold
Just purchased an OMM jacket, as my montane DT does on have a hood and fails to comply with new safety regs.
Its the OMM KAMLEIKA RACE JACKET II RUNNING JACKET.
See how this goes?
Cyclops what about the sizing of the ultratherm? Can you provide some more info? (size you wear, your height, weight and chest perimeter.
Vote for Montane minimus (waterproof) and featherlight (windproof) I have both these jackets and have used them plenty over the last couple of years. Also lightweight and pack down small.

I use a montane windshirt mainly but take the atomic for races that require waterproof. Just got a paramo wind proof smock which is really good too as has a hood. I prefer this in some ways as it's a bit healthier than the montane one and it's easier to regulate temperature. The hoods really useful when the hail is bouncing of my napper. It is a bit heavier though and doesn't pack down as small. I don't think I've ever worn the atomic jacket in anger.
