Willbe going for a few days of cycling and running, staying at Ambleside youth hostel, would appreciate any route suggestions to look at for the locality for some "gentle" off road biking and some running

Head up 'red screes' if you can.

Not far from the YHA...you run through Ambleside, along the valley which gradually gains height (if its sunny this place is amazing!), then a big steep climb up to Red Screens and then potentially the best descent ive ever run on all the way back into Ambleside.
Its only maybe 8 miles but its a belter!!!!

Good call from DT - Fairfield Horseshoe is a real classic that deserves all the interest it gets. However, over recent years the West side of the Horseshoe (the Heron Pike, Great Rigg side) has imo become a poor option - just a motorway sized path and, in poor weather, nothing to relieve the tedium.

What I prefer to do is to follow the valley from Ambleside to Grasmere, pick up the Tongue Gill path up to Grizedale Tarn. There's a very faint trod up from the East side of the Tarn to pick up the ridge between Deepdale Hause and St.Sunday's Crag. From the top of St Sunday's I backtrack along the ridge, an easy scramble up Cofa Pike and onto the back side of Fairfield. I then do the West side of Fairfield Horseshoe back to Ambleside.

If you're looking for something a bit tamer either on a bike or running then look at the West side of Windermere Lake and Claife Heights. You can access it either round the top of the Lake or across the Bowness Ferry. Really pleasant for easy biking, running, picnics and family nights under the stars

Get yourself into Lakes Runner Ambleside and speak to 'Barnsey" or nip upstairs to Bilbos cafe n 'The Noor' will point you in the right direction.
Checkout Ambleside AC website for training runs, everyone welcome.
