whats stopping you run a race

This has sometnhing that sprung to mind after reading the local races thread

If a race takes part on public rights of way what is stopping you turning up at the start line and running it alright you wont make any friends or get any accolades, but you will have run the race and you can time yourself to see how well you would have done on the finishing list

We debated this one to death a while ago. General consensus was it is a selfish thing to do as it potentially confuses other competitors and race organisers. The fairest way to do it would be to run the race route on any of the other 364 days available to you and compare your time in the same way.

A lot of fell races are run on private land or momentarily accross sections of private land. I look at every race i do on the map and most break from a right of way at some stage or another.

This has been discussed previously, as mentioned above.
    1) Being present on the start line can lead to the organiser mis-counting the number of starters.
    2) Running on the course during the race can lead to mis-counting at check points.
    3) Running through (or close to) the finish can lead to a missing runner left out on the course, again through mis-counting. Race results get wrecked - ask Wynn re AW.

In other words the safety of properly entered runners could be compromised. Forget rights, think responsibilities.
Rule 7 states:"No runner may take part in any fell race without having entered the race in accordance with the rules and procedures."
The perpetrator if identified, might find it difficult to get a fell race entry ever again - no bad thing.

Is there really any need to debate this further?

You can usually find an alternative route.
