Solution.
FRA race organisers limit entry to FRA members only.
FRA limits membership total as of today.
FRA only allows new members to join as current members leave.
Outcome.
Lots of happy FRA members.

Why do you say that there are too many racers?
I've been in races that have had thirty runners or so. Hardly too many on a nine mile race.
Some races are certainly over-subscribed but I don't think that restricting entry to FRA members is anything like the answer - it would give the impression that fell running is a closed sport only done by a small clique. Outcome: a dying sport.
A better solution would be for there to be more events, though people will always want to do the well known races, however look at the problems with getting the Teenage With Altitude up and running to see that this would take a while to bring in to effect. Having clubs choose races other than the popular ones for their club championships would be a start.

Without me you'd be one place nearer the back
Very strange thread!
Yes we all know that the likes of Langdale etc are over-subscribed but as Bob says there are plenty of races (including in the Lakes) that are undersubscribed eg Glaramara - 62 runners this year.
So A&O would you be willing to tell someone who had driven X miles to a race that they have supported for many a year that they couldn't run without proof of FRA membership?
There could never be "too many fell racers".The more the merrier,I say.If you're too late to enter a popular race;find another one to run.
(and I am an FRA member)
Ridiculous suggestion. This will just result in many people transfering to other sports such as triathlon -a trend that is on the increase. And many young athletes with huge potential not getting a chance to enter such events or be a member of the FRA. Its attitudes like this that WILL cause the sport to die. What will be next? Only those who live in the peak, the dales, or the lakes can be members?!
Local races for local people.
Tao begets one. One begets two. Two begets all things.
How about when we all join/re-join the FRA each year we should state how much we each earn per year so we can be suitably catagorised and kept seperate so people with any worries of the opposite class can avoid them. Im a student working part-time...that must put me well down.
