    How many hard sessions?

I am trying to get back to fitness after not racing for 15+ years, but this time I'm looking more to the fells than the track and roads.
Back in the day we used to do lots of mileage, Lydiard style, over the winter and then 2 track sessions a week approaching the race season. As fell racing requires all year fitness over an average of 6 or 7 miles what do you folks do when it comes to hard sessions per week? It's been so long I don't really know what's what any more?
Effective leadership is putting first things first. Effective management is discipline, carrying it out.

I think the general concensous is to limit it to two a week,

A hard speed work session on the flat and a hill reps session. Should cover you pretty well then in the summer substitute the hard session with a mid week race and race yourself fit

    Depends on your goals.
But Don summed it up with a tempo run and a hill session plus a long run.

Haven't got the self-discipline to do it, but agree twice a week is good. I tend to use short races as sharpeners.

i would start just with pushing it on the hills and letting go on the descents.
also try going for tempo runs.
try follow hard/easy.never 2 hard days together.
15 years is a fair time and age plays a part.
start by running as you feel, perhaps with the use of a hrm.
if you try to do too much too soon you will get stale and fed up.
as time goes on and you are finding improvement, then start with more intensive stuff,
but if you recall lydiards training methods,
he advocated building that base and then conditioning in phases.
    most of all enjoy.
