    MdS 2011

As some of you know, I work for Yorkshire Cancer Research, looking after the onward journey of promising research projects towards the cancer patient. A number of you were kind enough to sponsor my fundraising effort for YCR earlier in the year when I ran the CCC and raised around £3,000.

In the last few years, we have bought places in the Marathon des Sables and allocated these to people who want to do that race and raise funds for us.

One of the 2011 intake has pulled out, leaving us with a spare entry.

The dates of the race are 31 March to 11 April 2011.

The usual YCR deal is to ask our participants to achieve minimum sponsorship of £9,000.00 (which we usually achieve; our 6 runners in 2009 raised over £71,000 for us) but in the circumstances we will be happy with a minimum of £3,000.00 (to cover the cost of the trip.) Anything above this would be a return for us.

If anyone is interested in this opportunity, please PM me, and I will then pass you on to the YCR Events team for a discussion.

And I'll certainly sponsor any Forumite who takes up the challenge.

    The YCR website is here:

I've had a provisional candidate for the MdS place, which is good news.

I'll leave it the man himself to say more in due course, assuming he decides to go for it, and assuming he wants to say more on here.

Make that a definite candidate; the forms are back in Harrogate signed this morning.

    Dear All,

Thanks to Morgan I'm now signed up and paid my deposit for the MdS in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research http://www.yorkshirecancerresearch.org.uk

I'm not big on this forum lark, this is my first post, but as a fellow FRA member would like the opportunity to plead for your support and donations, which can be done by following the link http://www.justgiving.com/Dan-Booth

I've not a clue on how to tackle such a race. I have struggled round the Bob Graham, Paddy Buckley, UTMB and a few mountain marathons but any advice would be gratefully received particularly on how to deal with the temperatures, dunes, water rationing and blister issues.

I need to do a few runs along Merthyr Mawr sand dunes carrying kit and over dressed in the forthcoming weeks.

    Cheers
    Dan Booth

    Re: MdS 2011

Sadly, we (YCR) have had another withdrawal from our MdS "team"; medical reasons.

So, we have another entry for the race which we would like to fill with someone who would like to do the race and raise some funds for us.

Post # 1 says all I need to say.

Again, if anyone is interested, PM me and I will put you in touch with the YCR Events team.

    Thanks.

I'm not as mad as DanB - I have contented myself by sponsoring him instead!

Good luck to all doing it.

We've got a baby due in June but I'd love to have a bash at this.

Do you think negotiations with the wife are likely to end in a satisfactory resolution all round, or divorce?

Well, mine usually end in the former, not the latter, but Mrs BGSec is a handy lady vet fell runner.

I have had a bite at the cherry from another splendid Forumite with the appropriate pedigree, so hopefully this second place has been snapped up.

Those doing the MdS this year might find this programme interesting:

The "Toughest Race on Earth with James Cracknell" will be shown on Discovery Channel on Thursday 24 March at 9pm (UK time) - http://www.yourdiscovery.com/tv-sche...&date=24032011
