    Hip Bursitis

Has anyone had any experience of Trochanteric Bursitis (Hip Bursitis), where the bursa under the tendon on the outside of the hip becomes inflamed?

A friend is having trouble with it and it is proving stubborn, having kept her out of running for 12 months now.

I just thought there maybe a fellow sufferer out there who has some advice to pass on.

    Re: Hip Bursitis

I had it in the early days of my running when I was 18 - it took about 3 months to clear up as resting is the only solution - and it's one of those where you think it's gone, you go for a run, and it's back. Definitely anti-inflammatorys to calm down the pain and plenty of rest.
Once rested up, I remember there was a threshold before it would start to hurt again, started at about 2 miles, then gradually increased, until eventually I'd manage 10 miles. In those days, stretching was not on the agenda, but now I would recommend mobility exercises to the hip area once training again.
    Hope your friend recovers soon...

Thanks for that. It's difficult for her to rest because she teaches aerobics. She's hoping she can get a cortisone injection when she sees the specialist again in a week or two.

It seems to be a fairly rare condition. I'd never heard of it until she told me about it, and none of my running buddies have any experience of it. It certainly seems stubborn though - a bit like tennis elbow, which generally takes months to clear up.

    Re: Hip Bursitis

When I got a pain in my left hip, I did alot of reading and concluded that I also had Hip Bursitis. Although very uncomfortable at the time, I did manage to carry on running with it.

Then I started to take Cod Liver Oil capsules and the pain went away. Recently I ran out of capsules and didn't take them for a week and low and behold, the pain returned. I got some more capsules and immediately started taking them again and once again the pain has gone away.

These seem to be doing the trick for me, perhaps its something your friend could try.

Interesting! I'll pass that on to her. I think she's about ready to try anything now..

Well she's had another cortisone injection now. Will post again when the result of this one is known.

I did mention it to her but I think it's one of many things she's already tried, or is trying. She's now waiting for the soreness from the injection to subside, then we'll see if she can return to normal activity.

    Re: Hip Bursitis

The frustration continues. Three cortisone injections and no improvement!

She thinks the condition may be aggravated by an alignment/posture problem with her back but the doctors she's seen have offered no help on that.

Her active work and life generally don't allow her much opportunity to rest the hip but my experience is that rest is not usually very effective anyway. I've known people who rested an injury for months only to discover it was still there as soon as they began running again!

    Re: Hip Bursitis

Upcoming: barely related: When I had hip pain, I read up on it and thought it was what I had, but a quick trip to the physio and it actually wasn't - it was just incredibly tight muscles around the hip/bum and tight ITBs. Did a lot of stretching for a while, but don't run enough these days for it to show anyway if it was still a problem.
