Sportstrack Live is an app for an android phone. It costs about a fiver and can be used on an android phone with a built in GPS. I use mine with an HTC Desire HD, but with hindsight if I were doing it again I would get a Wildfire. It can also measure heart rate when connected to a Blue Tooth Heartrate Monitor like the Zephyr.

I like the piece in the article where it mentions that the temp got up to some 40 degrees in the day. All things considered, that's the toughest to prepare for I think.
