Nakd bars. Absolutely love them. Loads of different flavours & they usually contain cashews, dates, cocoa etc. Work a treat for me & loads better than the sick inducing gels ! Available at your local supermarket !

    +1 for shot bloks
    +1 for Naked bars
+1 for Cliff bars (not sure if anyone's mentioned them actually)

My fav gel at the moment is GU chocolate, first time was last weekend and I actually had to stop and savour it, damn fine. You get a hit of caffeine too which is always appreciated. Now I've found them I'm sticking with GU. Anton Krupicka runs on these too.

My advice is to stay away from fruity stuff, for really long runs its got to be chocolate.... num num num.

Torq gels for me. I can eat those rhubarb & custard ones until they come out me ears. I had about 7 in one ultra with no stomach upset. shot bloks are good as well not had them for a while though. remind me of jelly from the supermarket in the block before you melt it. they do caffeine ones too

Oh yeah, like twister says, clif bars too. they are very agreeable to eat on the go but can be home made easy enough. Just a more syrupy flapjack

Nakd bars are fantastic. Went off gels for some time as didn't seem to have any effect but recently was using a few up and noticed a hit - quite like the High5 ones, the Lucazade ones are too think for me.

Like Viper Bars or RideShots (the cola ones) when really feeling down, M&Ms are nice, best of all is Malt Loaf, peanuts and cheese - all rolled up together.

Actually out of everything I've tried malt loaf has to be one of the best.

I tend to eat mars bars when on training runs (because they're cheap and I'm going slower) but can't stomach them that well when moving a bit faster in races so go for energy gels then. Never tried anything but SiS ones, though I've got a couple of PowerBar ones to try out in the 3Ps tomorrow. Seem to work well for me!

Maltloaf... peanuts....cheese... why have I never thought of this

I've never found energy products to be any better than normal off the shelf stuff. Although there is probably quite a bit of psychology involved in that!! I'd advise experimenting and seeing what works for you, I've no doubt that a cliff bar or rideshot is very well balanced and effective with the energy it provides. But I still cant tell the difference between them and a handful of jelly babies! Maybe it's because some of them are harsh on the stomach, maybe it's because I'm a tight fisted git, maybe there just not that good. Either way I'm happy with haribo, jaffa cakes, mars bars, fruit pots, home made energy bars etc.

Try things out, see what works, no good something being scientifically formulated if it makes you want to barf! My new favourite is liquorice allsorts
