    THE GREAT LAKES RUN

    Sat 21st June 2008

A new fell race of classic proportions!
(as listed in the FRA calendar)

The route is packed with variety and includes much ground new to fell racing. After an eyeballs-out ascent of The Band to Bowfell, the route makes a high-level summit-hopping circuit of Upper Eskdale, including the two highest peaks in the Lakes: Scafell Pike and Scafell. There follows a mini-wilderness challenge from Slight Side to Blisco – fast running over the trackless reaches south of Great Moss. The final descent from Blisco is notably steep if you choose to take it head-on.

This race is being jointly organised by Ambleside AC and Lakes Runner, and supported by Lakes Runner.

Details have now been finalised and access agreements reached with the National Trust. The race now starts from Langdale (not Eskdale as previously advertised).

    13miles / 21km 7000feet / 2000m
Venue: Stool End Farm, Great Langdale 276057
START: 50M W of Stool End Farm
    1 BOWFELL 244064
    2 ESK PIKE 237074
    3 GREAT END 225084
    4 SCAFELL PIKE 215072
    5 FOXES TARN 209064
    6 SCAFELL 207064
    7 SLIGHT SIDE 209050
    8 PIKE OF BLISCO 271041
    FINISH: As Start

NB: the distances are accurate (not +20% as is the case in some races!).
Expected winning times are somewhere between the Langdale and Borrowdale times.
Some minor details may still change – watch this space.

    Start 11am
Entries on the day £4 - teams free
    Usual category A safety requirements
Race Map: Will be available from Race Maps in May showing the route, checkpoints and optimum line (as far as it is known!). Purchase on www.lakesrunner.com or in the Lakes Runner shop.

Enter this race – be there at the birth of a new classic!

This looks so good, I thought I was working but I'm off during the day (on Nights)

The Ennerdales the week before so legs will be tired but I'll have to do it, this race is 10miles shorter yet only 500ft less in ascent

I think Slight Side to Blisco may need a recce mind

That could be interesting with all the BGR'ers that day! Almost makes me wish I could do the race indead... I'll probably be a couple of hours behind the race by the time I reach Bowfell, but wonder if anyone will end up following the wrong crowd on the day!

Looks EXCELLENT. What a bold move, organising a race which does Scafell and the Pike. Even the mighty Wasdale avoids that problem.

(I guess the CP at Foxes Tarn was inevitable....)

Yes, it would be a bugger to finish your BG and realise you had missed out Ill Crag!

It is! Looking at the map though, the optimum route is pretty obvious (though it may not be on the day in mist...)

Looks a great route, good time of year mid summer light nights usually come camping at this time of year.
