I'm sure this like a lot of other things has been done to death on the forum so if there is a thread please point me in the right direction. I have been looking at hard tail mountain bikes around the £400-£500 mark particularly the Orbea tenere and the Cube analog disc but pretty confused and after advice.

Well you are on the right lines with the Cube. Very good bikes, very well specced and pretty much unbeatable for value.
What exactly are you confused about?
Might I suggest this bargain as well from Focus, currently with 25% off, and 2011 year, brilliant spec, and another well built and specced German made mountain bike, all for £487!
Considering its price, it has good components, hydraulic disc brakes, decent suspension, with the ability to lock them out on the handlebars if you wish.

Personally, I'd discount the Orbea - mechanical disc brakes and very low end components. I'd forget about the Focus being 'German made' - it ain't! It might be assembled there, but every single component, including the frame is from Taiwan - like every other bike component bar a few. That said, it's a fair spec.
If I had to pick one it would be the Boardman, but be prepared to upgrade the brakes sometime after.
Regardless,you won't touch that spec and quality for the price!
The majority of bikes are made in the far east, and I'd say it would be very hard to pick a bike up for £500 that isn't.
Boardman are quality bikes as well, just pick the one you like best.
