A sad day for music.
Indeed
Although to a certain extent they've had their day really. They've done some class songs over the years. "Losing my religion" has always been my favourite but couldn't really say why.

They saw me through some dark times
My favorite group along with the Smiths.
Perhaps they saw PJ20 on Tuesday and had to give up after they realised what a proper band is like ;-)
Nah, seriously, it's a shame. A great band that has been seriously underrated in the last ten years after their time in the limelight in the nineties. 31 years as a band is a long time by anybody's standards. And it all seems very amicable and considered.
Be Humble. Sit Down.
presumably this means we can look forward to their albums clogging up the charts again and a slew of boxset retrospectives etc..
i only ever really liked Orange Crush and i think that was because Stipe 'sang' with a megaphone on TotP !

Orange Crush came from the album "Green" in 1988, which is the first time I got into them as a student. I thought they were a terrific band with so many memorable songs. To be honest I think I'd welcome the "slew of boxsets" if it came as a lot of my albums on cassette are now warped.
Sad news indeed, athough, for me at least, their best years were well behind them. Their albums for IRS have been coming out in "deluxe" packages in the last year or so... bonus discs with bits and bobs, postcards, that kind of thing. Can't go wrong with a bit of Lifes Rich Pageant.
Actually can't get that worked up about it. A bright light 20 years ago, now well past their sell by date...by about 10 years? Still at least they had the moral courage to pull the plug unlike some others who really ought to....U2 anyone?
