    Lightweight Synthetic Down Top

Has anyone used the new OMM Rotor Smock?

    http://www.purekit.com/product.asp?p...mpaign=product

Looks good and very light, but not sure how warm the 40g Primaloft will be.

The other alternative I'm looking at is the Rab Generator smock:

    http://rab.uk.com/products/mens-clot...r-pull-on.html

70g heavier (350 vs 280), but I'm guessing will feel a good bit warmer. Will mainly be used for mountain marathons and stuffing in the pack for long runs in winter. Any thoughts, oh great gear gurus? Cheers.

Cheers. I had spotted that, but it's a pretty old thread and there's a new version out now. I've had a Generator gillet (and other Rab stuff) for a while now and that's lasted well, so I've no doubts over Rab's quality.

Hank, I have the generator jacket and it's a really good bit of kit but ... I think it has been improved upon by the designs where the down is sewn into smaller pockets, like the box-quilted style that Patagonia and another brand do - I was trying one in Needle Sports the other day. They keep the insulation much more evenly distributed and hence seem much warmer-per-weight. The insulation in mine has dropped into slightly lumpy collections and I'm going to replace this autumn.

Which might mean there'll be a cheap but lumpy generator jacket in the FS section ...

pretty good price on a Patagonia smock here ....

if you want proper lightweight- have you considered the Montane Fireball smock? Not as warm as the generator, but it packs smaller and is lighter. (those last 2 claims are going from memory rather than internet stats, but I'm more than sure I'm right)

    Re: Lightweight Synthetic Down

Thanks both. I had considered the Montane, but it seems pretty much identical to the OMM, except with less features and ever so slightly lighter. I think I'll probably go with the Rab as, whilst I'd like to go as light as possible, it looks to be the best balance of warmth, weight and general usefulness.

That Patagonia smock looks good, but have you felt one? There's virtually nothing to it! Very, very light, but it didn't feel like it'd give much warmth. I've got a slightly heavier Patagonia down jacket that I've used for MMs, but obviously it won't perform in the wet.

    Re: Lightweight Synthetic Down

I have owned a Rab photon for a few years now and love it. Its been used; pre and post race, for dog walking, camping, and has been taken all over the place as an emergency warm layer.
Yes I have had to do a few minor repairs but I still rate it.

    Re: Lightweight Synthetic Down

Do you specifically not want down? As it's not great when soaked!!
If down is an option have you looked at the PHD range, like this gillet?

    http://www.phdesigns.co.uk/product_i...roducts_id=202

I've a full sleeved down jacket, which I wear and carry everywhere and bundles up into virtually nothing if you want it to.
Don't roll with a pig in poo. You get covered in poo and the pig likes it.
