You may find it easier to take a mobile with camera , some have GPS which allows geo tagging of photos, it depends on the quality you want , as mobiles aren't dedicated cameras,
photos from my sons Blog are normally Geo tagged ,

just a view and another way of looking at the problem
Running or racing? I've not taken photos while racing but have while supporting BGRs and Ramsay rounds.
The following were taken with a NIkon D70 DSLR - https://picasaweb.google.com/BobEWig...yRound07062009 - it's quite a weight to lug around but you do get good quality images.
This set https://picasaweb.google.com/BobEWig...KfrgcGZ48yFywE was taken with a Canon A520 compact which I still have but no longer use, I'll come to why in a moment.
This set - https://picasaweb.google.com/BobEWig...kySBGR22052010 was taken with a Canon G11 large compact.
I've found that the smaller compacts have such small controls that it can be really hard at times to work the camera while on the move, I've got somewhat clumsy fingers from manual work and many years rock climbing so I find that the controls on the Canon G-series are much easier to operate. Obviously those on a DSLR are better laid out as well as the designers have more room to work with but you do have the downside of extra bulk and weight.
Another point to consider is how quickly you can get the camera ready - you can have the best camera in the world but if you have to stop, take off your sack, take the camera bag out, get the camera out of the bag then finally turn on the camera you aren't going to take many shots.
Check out Ian Charters' blog - he uses a Canon G11 when he's out running. In fact I got mine after seeing Ian's G10 when helping out on a winter BG and I was struggling to operate the buttons on the A520.

Without me you'd be one place nearer the back
My iphone 4 is fine for the odd photo when out running. It's got HD video too, so I can record my lad when he races. It's small enough for a bum bag too.
Hey up lowden
Have you thought about one of the waterproof/shockproof compacts? All the big brands have their own version, could be worth a look.
I have been using an Olympus mju 850, for the past few years and have been pleased with it. Its not too heavy and fits nicely into a rucksack pocket or bumbag. It has even been used it mid race http://sbrtrfr.blogspot.com/2011/04/...accidents.html. I gives me an excuse for being slow.
Thanks everyone for your advice I shall do some research on all of your suggestions. Cheers again
I have smashed a couple. Think about a hard case!

My old Olympus Mju finally gave up the other day on Scafell Pike I had it in one of those Inov-8 pockets on my rucksac, not very waterproof unfortunately ...

Another option is a helmet cam such as the Hero HD. Great footage parachuting or on a bike and you can use them like a traditional camera albeit one with a tiny viewfinder. The case is also designed to be water and shockproof and they fit easily into a pocket or strapped to waistbelt. I used industrial velcro to attach it to my parachute helmet and it has never wobbled and takes great pictures/video of empty sky for 95% of shots and crisp images of hands, boots and the grass for 5%!
