Recommended navigation courses

Hi all

I am back at square one having spent a little time off road and having then gone and moved darn sarf! (FOOL!) Anyhow.. I am attempting to set myself up with some nice long weekends next year to get back into some fell running and first things first I would like to look at learning how to navigate

I know there are some courses which can be found on t'internet but I wondered if anyone had any paticular recomendations? Esp good to hear if you have been on a good course.

FRA run one which is excellent value, I run one in the peak from time to time, Where are you based?

I am Essex based, so will have to travel to attend, we are also looking at mixing some training/races with a few long weekends next year and a navigation course would be part of that planning.

Based in Northern Peak, We should have the campsite and/or bunk house sorted by then so I could do an all in one price.

Depends on how many of you there are and if I need to get extra instructors in.
If you can get on the FRA course though this is excellent(and I should be there too with Big Compass and The Navigator) The price is fantastic for what you get, It's heavily subsidised.

Definitely recommend the FRA courses, but if you can't get a place then look for a course from a fell runner such as IDP

Ian, Your experience is vast but i didn't know you were offering courses for navigation as i can't think of anyone more qualified from having been there and doing it. If you are Nav course operating i would certainly be interested.

On a slightly different tack, there are a few of us who go up fairly regularly for day trips to the nearer fell areas from the Chelmsford area. The next few months are fairly typical, with plans afoot to go to Shropshire for Stretton Skyline(11/09), Breiddon Hills(9/10), Wrekin Wrecker(Nov), Cardington Cracker(4/12), and Derbyshire for Lantern Pike(17/09) and, possibly, The Roaches.
