3 top british fell champions used to do 80% of there running on roads,
also quite a bit of speed work on treadmills, and they lived in the middle of some brilliant countryside.
but ask them what they prefered and they would say fells everytime.
its like anything else, you get what you put in,
these guys knew to beat the best they had to train harder than the best.
    anyway sorry to digress,
    lunaglides for me.

Yes, it was meant as a joke...ish.

..but I think you'll find that Kenny went to road running after he'd achieved all he could on the fells and Dave Cannon pointed out there was money to be made...

I came across this in a really interesting article about Kenny Stuart ( Kenny Stuart-King of the Mountains. Mud Sweat and Tears)

    General Training Philosophy

    Throughout his career Kenny’s approach to training has more closely resembled that of a cross country runner than a traditional fell runner. This is illustrated in several key areas;
    • Lower overall mileage than most top fell racers
    • Limiting his running on fells to one third of total mileage in order to maintain leg speed
    • Inclusion of regular interval and fartlek sessions on road and grass
I'd put a link in if I knew how it's really interesting covering his training, preparation, diet etc. ("lower mileage" still meant 80 in winter!!)

8 stone as well no wonder he said when asked what his strongest memory of his racing career was: " Being hungry for 14 years"

BTW I'm not making clever points or arguing the toss I just think it is interesting.

Yes it is interesting. Kenny is probably a bad example actually because he is just an exceptional individual! He could probably have run rings round most people on ANY terrain....in a pair of pumps.

If someone has made some of those Huaraches with a Walsh PB sole i would be a happy man. Toe socks in winter all would be fine.
They called me mad and i called them mad and damn them they outvoted me !!!.

To achieve what he did as a working man is staggering.

That would be bizarre, your foot would slide all over as the sole gripped and your foot slipped on the mud etc. that would be all over it. Not to mention the pounding your foot would take from the studs through the sole, it would be like running on gravel all the time

I'd be interested in getting a link if you're able to email/PM it. I find that sort of thing intriguing.
