Like has been said by some, past their sell by date some time ago. They got overtaken by the grunge movement and lost their way in my opinion.
I wouldn't knock U2. They still have the knack of knocking out some great songs which REM lost and they were excellent at Glastonbury. A class act even if you don't like their music.
REM put me in mind of Simple Minds - about 3 albums of good stuff and then ran out of ideas.
