    Early fell runners

Can you name the fell runners in this picture?

The photograph was taken from the book published in 1973

    See the Conquering Hero Comes

The photograph was reproduced in the recent book:

Grasmere Sports. The First 150 Years
By Roy Morris. MTP Publications 2002

An earlier copy of the photograph was published in 1911.

Some Records of the Grasmere Sports

The names of the Guides racers for 1877 (or possibly 1875 or 1876!) are (from left to right)

    Cartmell. W.Pattinson, J.Birkett, Not known, W.Irwin, W.Greenop (3), J.Greenop (1), R.Jackson

The winning time was 17 min 45 sec.

A amateur Guide race was also run in 1877 and was won by T.Irwin

The umbrellas were to shade the spectators from the hot sunshine!

I thought he was the one with the policeman's helmet, the smile and no hands showing...
