    Fell running in New Zealand

I'm off to New Zealand in December and was hoping to take part in a few fell races while over there. I'm stuggling to find any off road running races, does anyone have any info on races or know what the equivalent term for 'fell running' would be?

I've managed to get a pass for a few big days out. I'm hoping to tackle some of the great walk routes. Any recommendations?

    Cheers Lemming

Which part? Its mountain running there. The Bush generally limits the routes available..a decent scene, not as many races but a fair few classics..

North Island Tararua mountain race and Jumbo Holdsworth are two that spring to mind, but the goat series of runs are good...check out coolrunning.co.nz http://www.coolrunning.co.nz/calendar/

Adam Perry, from Pennine, was over there last winter (or summer if you prefer) and went to do a mountain race. He was quite surprised to see 2 Ambleside vests there - Jane & Matt Reedy. Small world, so they say.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to be unlucky, I just miss the goat alpine run and there doesn't seem to be anything else going on for the month that I'm there.

Come on Jan, where are you in this hour of need? You must be an authority by now.

From memory the 'fell' races are all really expensive

The 5k series' are very good, they all seem to be a friendly bunch

From chats with Jan on this very subject, I think the problem is no open access like there is over here, so you can't go off into th'ills on a whim. Hence you're limited to organised races which are few and far between due to permissions required, which might explain the cost as per Pinchy's comment.

Sounds like if you're not there at the time of a race, you've dipped. But I await Jan 'The Man' himself to confirm/contradict...
