If Mola was near the Brownlees on the swim I'm amazed as he usually comes out halfway down the field. That's his weakness, he often ends up in the 2nd group on the bike.Originally Posted by (notsomuchofa)Fellrunner

Never taken part as I swim like a brick (some say I run like one as well), but I enjoy watching.
The interpretation by the writer on assistance seems a little away from the reality. We've seen at Olympics how the 3rd competitor is often picked on swimming ability as they can then act as a domestique on the bike for the stronger competitors.
That has to be assistance that is not open to all as it is only open to the compatriots.

I think pro races are still draught-legal in both the swim and bike. As an old age grouper I've started in many mass swims the worst ones at Wimbleball on Exmoor where I set off in up to 800 starters.In the mess of it all I do not think anyone pulls off someone's goggles intentionally.If you are not aggressive however someone will swim over you and that can have fatal consequences-so be prepared to kick strategically.

Aah yes, the old goggle trick, that's a Lancashire classic isn't it??Couldn't have been a Brownlee. The Yorkshire equivalent is to have your Whippet chew his bike shoes up, and seeing as his shoes were in good order...

Ali is on a different level. I love the way he just grabs the race by the scruff of the neck & says "this is mine".
