    Sports drinks/salt replacement

Hello! I'm looking for advice on electrolyte replacement.

A series of recent blackouts has been diagnosed as vasovagal syncope and I have been put on tablets to raise my blood pressure. I have also been advised to increase my salt intake and keep hydrated. Can anyone recommend electrolyte replacement products that are a bit more reliable than some squash with a pinch of salt added. I've used Nuuns in the past for longer events/runs and while I'm really happy with them would prefer something a bit cheaper for everyday use, particularly the short runs...

    Cheers,

    Rob

What tablets Rob, and did they say how much salt they wanted you to take? I suspect they did not give you a specific target. The normal recommended intake is 6gms per day, but unlike for example Vitamin intakes this is a maximum, not a minimum, something the food industry does it's best to hide. If you need to have a high salt intake it makes no sense to pay Nuun-type prices for it as salt is SO cheap. One level teaspoon of salt weighs about 6 gms - adding this - spread throughout the day - to a normal intake would be a reasonable start. Ideally you will be keeping an eye on your own BP at home to check the response, and not just waiting and hoping that there will be no further blackouts.

The Shotz electrolyte tabs are tasty when mixed up.

The best product by a country mile that I've found is the Elete stuff, particularly the liquid. It has absolutely no added nasties or sweeteners in it but is even more effective than the Nuun tablets I used to use.

The Hi-5 "Zero" tablets do the trick, I think they're just as good as Nuun but a teensy bit cheaper (you get 20 in a tube rather than 16 as with Nuun).

Elete is way cheaper than tablets + you can top a water bottle up if you don't use it all; you only need to buy the pocket bottle once and after that, buy it in bulk and refill the small bottle.
