Cheers Steve...
Ken I think Steve must have mis-typed, Auld'un
Long day in the hills doing the Dunmail to Honister slate mine section. Ridiculously warm, even higher up in sheltered areas whenever the wind wasn't gusting.
11.5 hrs in total and that was with a hydration backpack and a leisurely 20 min break at Wasdale where I met one of my prospective roadcrew. Chilled tinned peaches and rice pudding hit the spot before the hot haul up Yewbarrow.
In hindsight I probably wouldn't do it solo again as I wasted quite a bit of time scrabbling around for good water sources. I also wanted to recce the West Wall traverse and had a nervy moment scrambling up the wrong gully to ascend Kirk Fell. If I'd got into difficulties then lord knows what would've happened.
Still, glad to get it done and with more recce to tidy things up I reckon I'll be fighting fit and raring to go for the 23rd June

Sounds eventful "unsafe"
I recce'd Leg 1 and part of leg 2 yesterday, just for the hill training and it was the first ever time I have been up both Skiddaw and Blencathra when you can see where you are going! Set otf at around 6:20pm still in blazing sunshine :0)
There was one attempt ahead of us and possibly two behind. Once we reached Blencathra the wind didn't half pick up and we were never out of it again until we headed down fron the Dodds towards Keswick via sticks pass. I hope they all managed to complete!!
Anyway after some advice...
How much should I taper? (3 weeks to go)
And see Ken, Steve agrees with me!
I would suggest that 2 weeks is plenty, so that means you can recce the rest of leg 2, all of 3, 4 and 5 next week Ash!!

Cheers Linda.
Well I have 6mile fell race on Wednesday evening and may do leg 5 at the weekend.
Well, having started this thread in what seems a life time ago I'm still training.
I was one of the DP contenders in the aborted (wisely) attempt last weekend.
So now looking to go on the 24th August. Just got to get a support team together during the summer holidays!
Speaking of aborted attempts, a lady from Macc had to abandon 4 weeks ago (same day as Ash got round) halfway through Leg 2 in horrendous weather. She quickly re-scheduled for tomorrow; got the support sorted but has decided to postpone again due to the weather forecast... doesn't want a repeat of the first go.
I have trained aplenty this year to go on 25th May, but made a poor takeaway decision 4 weeks beforehand and spent the first fortnight of May off work with Campylobacter... tried to re-schedule for July, but still not back to where I was... realisticaly, decided to put it off for a couple of years:closed:. Still had some memorable days out though
Other folk seem to have had a good roll of the dice and their undoubted hard graft and resilience has seen them through.... Sincere congratulations to every one.
