    Great fell races...

this year I had a go at the Wasdale and thoroughly enjoyed the heady mix of the ambiance, the occasion, the majesty of the surroundings, some terrible topographical challenges and last but most seeing Mr Naylor......I am most grateful to those who organised and helped out at the race....fantastic.

Which other races can rival Wasdale in terms of presenting not only an epic landscape to traverse, but also a feeling of having glimpsed a small part of the essence of fell running, if that makes sense ?

I'm thinking may be some of the Scottish ones, but I am ignorant of their history and looking for recommendations please ?

    Thank you

Burnsall. Not called 'Classic' for nothing

The landscape might not be 'epic' on a Wasdale scale but it captures perfectly for me the simplicity of an 'I'll race you to the top of the hill and back down' fell race

Is Burnsall a good one? Not done it myself and hoping do some more ALs in 2012.

I did the Peris half this year - the full Peris Horseshoe looks like a real classic AL to rival Lakeland ones and I think is in need of support.

Think my only AL for 2011 was Tour of Pendle - a sweeping monster!

Will, I think I misunderstood the OP. Burnsall is 1.6mile and 900ft

Ennerdale - a much more aesthetically pleasing route than Wasdale or Duddon in the best part of the Lakes and Joss's favourite race. What more could you ask for?

Jura, for obvious reasons, you can't call youself a fell runner until you've survived Jura!! And that's just the post race bash!!

I've done all the big classics and my heart belongs to Peris. It's a fantastic race and is even more difficult than the distance and climb suggests - the time of year, the rough ground, the navigation issues, the low key nature of it.... it's a great mix and a proper challenge. If you haven't done it, it's arguable that your fell running education is incomplete :-D Jura runs it a close second (even with the road hell at the end)
