That explains a lot. I was a bit worried on Saturday as one of the lines was showing no signs of stud marks I was assuming I was in the wrong place. Maybe not so!

Not came across that word before! cognoscenti

people with informed appreciation of a particular field, esp in the fine arts; connoisseurs

Good luck to you all, I'm not racing this year (kid's party to be at for lunch) but will be marshalling at the fingerpost at crookstone barn. will have emergency sweets, but hope nobody needs them by then!!

About grindsbrook, I find the direct quicker but I'm a slow plodding type on the flat. Did the normal route last year losing 7 places, but gained a couple going the direct way in 2010. It's an outstanding descent too!

Always wondered about that! Would the slow assent have less significant effect on a slower runner compared to a fast runner who would make up a lot of time on the flat?

    Does that make sense?

I think so, I'm a fast descender, reasonable climber but slowed than I should be on the flat. I think you'd need to be noticeably quicker on the hills than the flat to benefit

...and then you'd have to have something in your legs for the long descent. wouldn't be quick if you have jelly legs from the climb

Didn't mention it in my post earlier, but I did take a tumble on the final run down, because my legs didn't keep up with the top half of my body. I was, of course, past caring by then.

Part of my reasoning, if I can justify the term, of going direct was that I was tiring quickly and felt the long, flat route would get to me more than the short, sharp shock. The trouble, of course, is that you never know what would have happened if you'd chosen the other option.

Even top 30 runners lose places on the direct line - Carl Edgell was way ahead of me at Grindslow and didn't look too great as I hit the bottom of Ringing Roger going down whilst he was going up. But, as he said, you have to try it!

I'll no longer be joining you, passed my entry over to a chum. Iffy knee was always a worry, but the addition of realising just how fell fit I ain't at the moment on Saturday made the decision that much easier. Next year...

Have fun Folks - one of my best ever days on the hill last year.
