    Running with a bergen!

I'm doing the fandance challenge in May and wanted the advice of any ex military types. I'm not sure if i can trust my mudclaws running with30lbs of weight on my back. I'm wanting to know if i should go for boots for ankle support given that my right ankle is weaker anyhow. Any advice appreciated.

Go for boots mate, and start off with lighter weight in your bergen and increase it steadily to 30lbs.

I had a pair of these years ago, lightweight and good ankle support.

Having spent the formative years of my life with a bergen resembling a house on my back I would advise boots. as for the fan dance this should be done with boots to get a true perspective. And remember "if it ain't raining it ain't training laddie !".

I agree with boots for sure. I use Lowa Mountain GTX and they are brilliant for moving fast in the hills with a bergen.

When I injured my ankle last year I changed my training from running to long walks with a bergen to keep fitness up.

    Its good training

I switched late last season to using my mudclaws* when lugging my toddler up hills (probably 40lbs total weight). I had no trouble, and I don't have the best ankles in the world. I don't run with my toddler on my back, of course, but I reckon it would be possible. However, as others say, doing the fan dance in shoes feels a bit like cheating

    * I was too tight to buy a new pair of boots after admitting the old ones barely had enough tread to get to the bottom of the garden.

I switched to wearing a pair of boots at work once after wearing shoes for a year or two, it took only a few weeks for the extra 'support' to weaken my ankles considerably and my downhill performance really suffered as a result.
