The big oak tree

I have been running under its canopy, sometimes as often as three times a week, for over thirty years; and yet it was only a month or two ago that I really noticed what a magnificent specimen it is. It's an oak tree next to the bridleway up to the Outwoods. It's not old enough to be gnarled or twisted; probably less than 200 years old. It has a straight trunk but, being a lone tree in a hedgerow, it is not especially tall; instead, its branches have a huge horizontal span.

I have obviously been concentrating too much on where I am putting my feet all these years, and not looking upwards enough.

There's people on here less than 200 years old who are definitely gnarly and twisted.

My 2 favourite varieties of trees are Oak and Beech.

We have a magnificent huge old oak tree outside Otley. On the edge of the woods if you go over over the Washburn from Leathley and go up the side of the big field heading for Farnley Hall. I call it the big tree and regularly point it out to other runners. With a carpet of bluebells underneath it its sublime.
