Knee - should I be worried?

I managed to knack my knee by running onto a brick sized stone (on the track below High Rigg- Hi if you two on the ascent are reading). My forefoot hit it and as I rocked over my knee was flexed the wrong way. At the time It just felt just bit of a jolt and I continued for the last two miles or so without giving it a second thought. The next day it was clear I'd knacked it. I had to really think to remember how I might have injured it so light the incident felt at the time. five days later it clicks and feels loose. Money is a bit tight right now so I don't want to see a physio if I can avoid it. Any thoughts or advice most welcome.

Beg, steal or borrow some cash and see a physio asap. Knees problems / injuries are too complex to ignore

Thanks guys, both very sensible ideas. Just wondered if there was any self help stuff other than RICE that I could do or if there was a likely diagnosis?

agree with the other two - you need to see someone asap. if I read your message correctly it sounds like you hyperextended the knee - ligament damage may have occurred, or the meniscii could be involved. best get a proper diagnosis straight away so you know how to rehab and how soon you can run again.

Thanks guys- did as suggested and it was as diagnosed above (hyperextended) However two months and I still can't run on it. I've been doing the physio exercises and the GP xrayed it and pronounced that I had very good knees! He's a runner too and prescribed Ibuprofen 3 times a day and short runs. Problem is after about 15 yards I'm limping so don't continue. It doesn't lock or catch but I'm getting very frustrated at the complete lack of improvement; if anything it is getting worse! Doubly irritating as it seemed like nothing at the time. Any ideas?

I'd suggest going back to your GP. Clearly something isn't right and you need referral to a specialist.Tim

If you can pay and see a sports physio. GP's are as its says on the tin General Practioners. Its worth the expense to see a specialist.

Re: Knee - should I be worried

If you were my patient with a history like this I would be arranging an MRI scan to check the soft tissues in the knee, an xray only gives info on the status of the bones or calcification in soft tissues. Pain after so long and after so short a time running does point to an internal structural problem.

Thanks Protodoc. Yes I have been referred to a specialist but it is a long wait (late April) When you say 'internal structural problems' what would be your guess and the likely treatment. I can cycle without pain but I find it very boring.
