They're specially drawn by a map maker and former elite orienteer. Probably more similar in style to Harveys than OS, but much less cluttered than the Harvey race maps, with pretty much only the salient features you're likely to use whilst racing shown. They also show the "racing line" and hints/tips, if you're in to that kind of thing.

I'd definitely have a look at them Plodding Bear. They got me round a couple of routes without having to refer to an OS map.

A Lakes Runner Coledale map is winging its way to me as we speak (hopefully!).

Cheers guys, I'm not up to racing in the lakes just yet but thought I might pop up for a weekend and do a couple of routes at my own pace. Maybe the Anniversary waltz, and another in the general vicinity of Borrowdale/SE Keswick area, about 10 - 15 miles...any recommendations?

Is the Coledale Horseshoe SE Keswick area? If so, I'd say it's worth a go. It looks a lovely route - 9 miles apparently.

    Starts at Braithwaite.

Yeah, it's a great route. And if you're in Borrowdale you might as well have a crack at the Borrowdale race route. A beast for sure, but a grand day out.

...Borrowdale race route? I've seen it on Youtube, looks a scary beast! I might have a look at Coledale - off the top of my head, I'm assuming it's a horseshoe route around the top of, er, Coledale???

well the Anni Waltz is the obvious one and apart from the Borrowdale race it's the only one that is on your doorstep there (I think).
You'd have to get in the car to get to do Coledale - unless you wanted the extra four miles or so runnign there and back to Braithwaite.

But why stick to a race route? Just get out and have a run.

If you want something less punchy in terms of ascent or if the weather's dodge, but still want a good distance, you could do the route of the Four Passes LDWA event, which is a great run.

Another great option is to run from Keswick up over either Causey or Grisedale Pike, following one of the ridges across and down into Buttermere and jumping on the bus back to Keswick. Although not sure the bus will be running until Easter.

It goes up Grisedale Pike and around to Barrow.

    Borrowdale isn't 10-15 miles I don't think! Thought it was 20ish.
