    Bob Graham pacing

As I get fitter, I am looking to do the BG, but I think pacing someone would be helpful for at least one or two of the legs.

    1) How do I go about getting involved?

    2) Should I have done any personal recce for the legs?

Sorry if these sound like stupid questions.

Folk ask on here so simply offer your services

It helps but isn't absolutely necessary - depends if you are being asked to navigate or not.

One way might be to offer to help but make it clear that you might not be fit enough. The later legs tend to be slower so can be better for first timers. The central leg can be supported in two halves: as far as Bowfell then the remainder so it's possible to do just a small bit of this.

Without me you'd be one place nearer the back

Remember it is just not looking for help on the attempt itself but going out for reccie runs. In the BG section it is happening continuously that guys are arranging reccie runs.

Hank seems to be very active at the moment (and from reading his discussions he really seems to know his stuff)

do you mean "pacing" or do you mean "sherpa-ing"
actual pacing - making sure the contender hits projected splits as well as total leg time - is quite a skilled job in itself

I made sure I could get round a particular leg in under the scheduled time (carrying a heavy pack) before I volunteered to support an actual attempt
Scramble the rock face through the glare of morning sun — to run

I started out by doing recces by myself and then getting out with others. I'm doing plenty of stuff with others at the moment (off here) and people are always happy to join up for training runs. You'll learn a lot by doing this, such as what your BG pace is like, eating correctly and finding out new lines that you may not necessarily have thought of using etc. etc. In addition, getting out with other BG contenders often means that transport logistics are more easily covered between you.

Once you've done these and are confident then see if you can get on someone's BG attempt just as a mule - you'll learn even more doing this. It can also be great fun!

I'm going for mine on june 2nd and would be happy for you to come along to gain some experience. I live fairly locally so am getting out in the fells regularly at the moment - if you're interested I can keep you informed of recce runs.

If you turn up without knowing people its best to go on a leg which is in day light and non serious.. the last thing you want is people waiting for you on a tricky night leg..

All very sensible advice, I hadn't thought of many of these things.

    Hello,

Definitely good to get out with others on the recces. Once you've done a bit of that then helping people on their attempts is excellent experience as you get to see how the support crew stuff works as well as what you'll have to go through too! I did this with Andy Blackett last weekend and learnt loads.

I'll be running round this weekend if you fancy joining for a bit (maybe able to help get you back from the end of a leg as well). Doing Legs 3 and 4 on Saturday and then 5, 1 and 2 on Sunday in preparation for my attempt on Sunday 3rd June. Feel free to join in on any of that. I'd recommend Legs 5 or 2 to start off with as they're a bit easier and the logistics'll be easiest too.

    Andy

P.S. If anyone else fancies coming along this weekend then PM me.

    Andy

Many thanks for the offer for the weekend and had it not been Easter weekend, I might have gone for it. Will keep an eye out and see if I can help another time.
