    Football cheats

Interesting letter in the Guardian today about cheating in football, and how this makes it so much more difficult for the officials than it would otherwise be. The author contrasts football with tennis and golf, where he feels "sportsmanship and self-regulation are considerably more apparent". Certainly diving, shirt-pulling, claiming for throw-ins and corners are all visible in every game, and managers "tacitly condone this behaviour".

Imagine a game of football where there was no cheating and you could trust the players to police themselves - wouldn't it be wonderful?

Cheating in Cricket.. match fixing and betting..
Cheating in rugby.. bloodgate.. pretty horrific deliberate injuries..
    Cheating in Athletics.. blood doping..

Cheating in football.. heat of the moment dives or shirt pulling.. I think other sports should sort their own houses out first..

And anyway, yes the refs can help. Award penalties if a player tries to stay on his feet.. they don't. There was a great article by Gery Neville recently on the niavity of British players at diving in and trying to stay on their feet, and after 25 years in the game how his view changed..

The application of the advantage rule means players have to go to ground.. they stay up try to be honest and if they miss from an off balance position, have lost their advantage... what a silly rule..
