Hi Mark,
Any news? how's he getting on? Can't seem to get you on twitter? my fault probably.
Cheers
Andy.
Take a look on the BG section Andy... looks like he's going OK![]()
update from his twitter feed at 3.57am
"4mins behind leaving Dunmail. Enough support to carry him on leg3. Rain has stopped! Wasdale next."
no further updates since then.
Unfortunately Martyn pulled out at Pillar, absolutely awesome just getting there in those conditions. I supported him on leg 2 and can confirm conditions were terrible, clag, driving icy rain, wind and sodden trods. I was knackered after just one leg (brilliant navigation by Andy McCraken) but he was 4 minutes down on his schedule at Dunmail. Conditions remained awful for the rest of his attempt and he was 40 minutes down when he reached Wasdale due to very slow progress over boulders slippy as ice at Bowfell. By the time he got to Pillar he knew it was impossible to make sub 24 and sensibly pulled out. This was more like a Winter round weather wise! Gutted for him but I know he'll be back to complete soon. Well done mate.
sorry to hear this
but not surprised - I was up on Snowdon briefly yesterday and it was hard to believe it was June - spending prolonged periods at height in those conditions would be very tough
the great land stretches on, where the endless hopes are born
No shame in pulling out in those conditions. Some things you can plan for and control, some you can't... well done for getting so far.
Martin, the experience will make you stronger for next time, so don't be too pi$$ed off at this development. I know we've never met, but from following this forum, it looks like you've put in the graft only to have bad luck pi$$ on your strawberries... something that stopped me starting in Mayand might be my undoing in July, but what can you do?
Keep your glass half full mate![]()
I only just saw this thread. Thanks very much for the kind words, it's made the whole disappointment thing a bit easier to bear. Bad luck did indeed pi$$ on my strawberries .... but I'll be back for more. I'm 90% recovered from the day but unfortunately can't get back out on the fells just yet, it appears I did some damage to the tibialis anterior (shin muscle) in my right leg, this is one of the big descending muscles and it's as sore as hell and very swollen and creaky. I don't know how it happened, but can remember it feeling sore coming off Scafell :-(
