Indeed, in general most 'normal' good insurance policies cover recreational sports activities within certain criteria (designated zones, qulified guides, etc) but not 'competition' - you'd generally be paying a higher premium to include racing. Naturally, on average the risks to the average person are higher when you are racing.
Interestingly I have to pay out £90-£100 every 2 years for an Offshore Medical examination as part of certifiction to work offshore (rigs), but I have never thought about whether it would cover me for other things too. Maybe I'm missing a trick - must bring it up next year and take along my UTMB form.
