    FRA Navigation Course

Has anyone been on these courses?

I was wondering what the general format was?

    Who was the course provider?

Were they following the NNAS schemes, i.e. a recognised navigation qualification, or just a general course tailored for fell running?

    Cheers

    Iain

    The timing never suits me....

A friend of mine booked twice to take part on the course but missed out both times due to being unable to find the location.

A group from my club went on an FRA course at Elterwater a few years back. Highly recommended and great fun too.

Fellmonster sounds like your friend is most in need of a navigation course.

Best to ask Chris K about it, he was one of the instructors on the Kettlewell one.

It's an excellent weekend, I went with some knowledge of navigation but the course helped me out.

Excellent value for the money, but you need to get booked onto them well in advance as they get full up pretty quick.

It's more that we are thinking that there may be the demand for such a course ran in Snowdonia, I'm getting registered as a National Navigation Award Scheme Provider as a Summer ML holder, so could teach the Bronze and silver aspects of that from a running perspective, though things are different between running and walking.

Iain I know that the FRA are after some instructors.

I don't know what qualifications they have.

Arrive Friday evening; quick chat, few pints in the Britannia
Saturday; pre breakfast run under Lingmoor; breakfast; small group tuition for full day on the fells in ratio 1 to 3, includes pacing, orienteering from map and ground features, packed lunch etc; shower, evening meal; competitive night small course orienteering in pairs, another shower, pint in the Britannia if you were quick enough otherwise get some sleep to prepare for the next day
Sunday; pre breakfast run down the valley; breakfast, revisit the site of the night orienteering crimes to see where you cocked up; chat about fellrunning,MMs etc; packed lunch; test piece navigation course for solo runners (10K approx if you get it right, much longer if not).

Add to that; experienced advice, continual evaluation and feedback; book and media references etc

Hard work, not a jolly, but well worth the money; helped me no end. Thanks again to all the volunteers who gave so freely of their time
