Thread: The Film Reviewer

    The Film Reviewer

Argo: an excellent American film. Hollywood does not do better than this.

The Master: enigmatic, memorable and a film which you may not enjoy but, if you care about cinem, you will need to have seen.

On The Road: interesting but flawed; more Hollywood than Kerouac.

Lawless: if you have seen a lot of movies you have seen what goes into this one, but it does what it does very well.

Anna Karenina: Leo Tolstoy could write but Keira Knightly cannot act. Unfortunately this is a movie (and one which visibly ran out of money)

Appreciated the acting in this, top drawer, but never really got into it.

The big question, though: what will your take on the hobbit be...

Hope it's okay; you don't want to get into bad hobbits.

I agree with you on Keira Knightly which is enough for me to give that film a miss. I think the quality of a film can often be judged by the people who are cast. For instance any film with Nicholas Cage, Brad Pitt, Leonardo Dicaprio, Cameron Diaz, Julie Roberts and others of that ilk is definitely a sign that one should avoid watching. Liam Neeson can act but he is on his final warning after taking the lead role in 'Taken.' That film will be a stain on his record for eternity.

Although I can see where you're coming from, Brad Pitt has been in some brilliant films - Thelma and Louise, Legend of the Fall, Se7en, 12 Monkeys, Moneyball and, although he was a bit crap in it, Inglorious Bastards. Nicholas Cage I agree with although Face Off was pretty darn good. Leonardo was good in The Aviator and Romeo & Juliet and perhaps Inception, whilst Cameron Diaz was great in Any Given Sunday and Julia Roberts in Sleeping with the Enemy. Liam Neeson is a hallmark for crap films on the other hand and even in Schindlers List Ralph Fiennes stole the show.

Cage - Leaving las vegas, 8mm, wild at heart are all good films
Pitt - True romance, fight club, inglorious basterds, 12 monkeys, se7en and Kalifornia are all great films. And I've heard good things about killing them softly.
Leonardo - The departed and catch me if you can are good.

However none are a patch on my personal top 3

Hey I was just fine tuning my reply. Legends of the fall was ok because of Hopkins not because of Pitt. Se7en and 12 monkeys from recollection were very poor. You see you give these rubbish actors and actresses too many chances and they make millions from being crap.

Stolly how about you starring in two new films? The first one we could call 'I Don't Take This Too Seriously,' and the second 'Grease Lightening.':closed:

Agree on Catch me if you Can - great film.

For me it's back a generation to Newman, Redford, McQueen, Eastwood and for the ladies Audrey Hepburn.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is still my favourite film of all time, closely followed by Apocolypse Now.
