Jake, Bill and all at CVFR,
Quick note of thanks from me for all those involved in organising/marshalling the Trog.
A fantastic race that brings out the beast and worst in all of us.

Thanks Mark. Being on home ground does help. ;-)

It was as boggy as I've known it, but the elements can be a lot worse than that!
The race used to go along Deep Nitch (also marked on the map as "The Waste"!!) from Top O'Stairs; that was the section where you were most likely to be taken by the bogmonster. But erosion forced us to now take the lower route via new checkpoint 6 - which means less bogs than a few years ago.

One year I came as close to hypothermia on that race as I'll ever care to be, and as a result I am now overly paranoid about wearing and carrying more than enough gear, at every race I do. Just one of the reasons it is the Beast.

How much difference does the route change make? I'm curious because the only time I did this race was in 2009, when Rob Jebb won (in snowy conditions) in a time of 3 hrs 13 mins. Winning times are typically half an hour quicker these days. Surely Rob wasn't that slow, was he?!

Rob Jebb was just too slow. Needed to pull his finger out.

The route is a mile and a half shorter than it used to be, but a big difference from year to year is the weather. Especially early Feb it varies so much.
There have been years with a lot of snow and ice. There was quite a lot in 2009. But in recent years its been more wet than snow - and it was the ice that used to really slow down the descents and ascents.

There were no shortage of bottomless bogs this year on it. But to be fair conditions were not as bad as I expected.

The post was from 2017, so I guess that's the year they're from!
