Ovenden is already on my list as I used to lie very close and had some lovely runs in that area.

    Thanks for The reply.

The Stirton Classic in July is definitely beginner friendly, even I managed it once!

    Re: Beginner friendly races

I'd like to ask a quick, related question here if I may.

ER - Experience Required. Does that simply mean that if you've never run off-road before this race isn't for you or are there differing levels of experience required? How much fell running does one need to have done?

FWIW I found the last couple of Lakeland Trails trail races to be far harder than, say, the Stanbury Splash for example. Yet one is a fell race, the others aren't.

Should I be entering ER races by now?

    It depends..

I know the Peris organiser denied a local mountain guide entry for lack of experience....

Ridiculous.. the runner posed no threat to the race..

personally I think an experienced mountain walker has the experience.. it doesn;t mean running.. most/many runners will race for years and not use a map and compass half as much as a hill alker..

In grand weather all fell races are fairly beginner friendly. In bad weather though nearly all of them might not be

Midgley Moor was my first off road run, never mind race! I wasn't quite last, largely through running to keep up with the person in front for fear of getting lost! Midsummer Madness is also OK for beginners, I think I made the series my 2nd, 3rd and 4th races (and lost my big toenail in the process  which made me feel like a proper runner). Cragg Vale is another one suitable for beginners, though bring your midge repellent! The Hebden Bridge race tends to hand out a prize to anyone doing their first race, and the Heptonstall Festival organisers welcome anyone they can persuade into trainers into their race.

    Happy Running!

I did Thieveley Pike as my first one. How does that size up in terms of beginner-friendliness? Genuinely have no real frame of reference. Seemed simple enough in theory, run up that hill following those men, etc. Downhill was hard, not a fan of that.
