Question Training in a flat area?

Not everyone here can live in Keswick. What do those of you who live in flat/urban areas do for hill training?

I live in suburbia, near a canal with some woods and a former railway 'linear park nearby, but the land is almost entirely flat other than a couple of old railway embankments, which is a bit frustrating. Decent hills are a 25min drive away.

Sprint sessions - flat out for a set period, walk back, etc

In almost any town you should find steps to run up and down - outside buildings, etc.

    Good Luck.

Where I live isn't totally flat but not exactly hilly either. What I do is a hill session up a fairly shallow hill of about 150m length and do hill sprints with a jog back recovery. I've also the luxury of a 300m hill which I do the same on.

    MC,

if it's only a 25 minute drive, go there once a week specifically for hill training.

I live on the Fylde, which is v flat, but can, and do, get to the Bowland fells in 35 minutes. Well worth it.

    Cheers, Ali

I live in Hertfordshire, near the border with Essex and its pretty flat round here.

I find cycling is a good substitute for uphill running, as has been suggested on this forum many times. Plain old (flat) speedwork helps too.

I try and get back up North (where I was born&bred) about once a month to race in the hills though, otherwise what's the point in training for them?

Living in possibly one of the flattest parts of the country this is a thread that will interest me. Didn't realise speed work would make a difference so I'll have to give that a go, just a shame that I'm exactly a speedy runner

Still off to the Lakes next week so hills will be in abundance.
