Navigation for Fell Runners Courses in the Peak district update
We have now completed 2 successful pilot courses and we are now ready to start delivering for real. After a lot of consultation we have now decided on the following:

There are 2 levels of course, Introductory and Intermediate.
The introductory course assumes no prior knowledge and will take you through the basic principles of navigating on the fells. It is aimed at those who are thinking of competing in the hills for the first time and aims to build their skills and confidence. Very briefly, it covers the following subject areas:
Symbols
Map to ground and ground to map
Folding and setting the map using features and rough compass
Route planning
Scale and distance
Compass bearings
Contour lines
Grid references
Application of the above skills to a competitive situation

The intermediate course is for those with some experience. They must be confident with the skills listed above. A typical example would be someone who is able to navigate themselves around a route but wants to be able to make their own decisions about what the optimum route may be.

Both courses contain a little bit of classroom based work but are mostly delivered practically. Both courses run from 0900 - 1700

Please come equipped for the weather. Full waterproof body cover, hat, gloves and (as we will be standing still for some of the time) lots of extra layers.

The course intends to provide quality and as such the ratio will be a maximum of 1 to 4 on the basic course and 1 to 6 on the advanced course, number are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis

Each course costs £55 for the day, the dates and locations have now been confirmed as

May 24, Whitehall Centre
