Thread: Three Shires

I reckon they're only an indication as to one of the ways down - you can short cut the zig zag bits down to the track!

Fink so - from memory a stream straightlines the zigs and the zags - rougher but quicker the lower down you get as the angle relents, so might even say it is a winning line!

Don Keycock - Yes, I do think there is a shorter way but for those that have followed me on my other "shorter" routes, you will know they are, as a general rule of thumb, 3-5 minutes longer and involve around 100' of climbing and 1/4mile extra of running....

Timo - I think the zig-zags you talk about, just before you hit the track, are flagged off so that you are obliged to follow the path, not the shortcuts.
Why walk when you can run.

Thinking of going up for recce tomorrow, where's the best place to park?

    Re: Three Shires

You could park at the National Trust car park at Blea Tarn. You would have to do the last bit of the course first but it is right on the route.

Car Park at Blea Tarn. It does mean you start with the final climb though.

Alternatively, get there early and you can squeeze in on the bend, just past Three Shires, and immediately after the phone box. Then you start with 'the start'.

Wetherlam climb is the worst climb I know of in any race.

Cheers, probably be Blea Tarn, I can have a warm up on Lingmoor before the slog up Wetherlam, I don't think I've been a nice way up there.

I know what you mean. This was my first Lakes race 2 years ago after about a year of running in the Peak. That climb up Wetherlam came as a bit of shock, I can tell you.

Hope to be back this year, although it clashes with Lantern Pike again (one of my local races), which is a shame.
