Danbert, don't mess around with any of these 'bucket' methods. Take lethal action swiftly and take it now. You need one of these:

    It does this:

    The end result is this:

Rats are almost as dangerous as dogs. Kill em.
A punch should stay like a treasure in the sleeve. It should not be used indiscrimately.

Or put bleach in the bottom of the bucket... that should do it.

Gotta say, that looks neat. Here is a video, clearly in NZ they don't feel the need to pander to that ridiculous "no animals were harmed..." nonsense...

Here's another method...electrify them and light em up like a Catherine Wheel!

    Make yourself a 'bender' snare:
    http://www.thehuntinglife.com/rat-snaring/

Many years ago one of our lads used to make and use them on the fish farm, where we always had rat problems due to dropped food and dead fish etc. He was great at catching them by this method. It's basically just a snare attached to a bent hazel twig, which when set off twangs up in the air so the rat is left dangling. All over pretty quick.
Don't roll with a pig in poo. You get covered in poo and the pig likes it.

Not sure I'd want to catch one alive. It might be really narky when you try to leave it out.
