Not a huge fan of gels and power drinks. Always liked the idea of running on water...but it gets a bit boring. So what's the best one off the shelf...as opposed to something where I have to mix x and y and blend this or that. Leaning towards apple juice, wonder is it easy on the stomach during a run.

Flat coke interesting, had thought of flat 7up alright.
Galtees this weekend here in Ireland, 12.6k, 1340m so know I'll need to slake something...think I might try half apple juice half water and see how that goes anyway.
Lucozade Sport and most supermarket own brands are a bit too sweet for my liking (about 140 kCal/500ml) so I end up watering those down.
Gatorade and Powerade are just right though (about 80 kCal/500ml) and go down nicely
Gatorade tastes best, but it's harder to find and rarely discounted, so I usually end up with Powerade
or you can buy powder and mix to strength you prefer (I like SIS)
powder is also good cos you can take just the powder out onto the hill with you, and mix it up when you reach a stream/spring/water-station

I like Nuun lemon and lime tablets. Not at all sickly and wards off cramps. Tend to save it for races like Langdale and just go with water otherwise. The other thing I like is, I prefer a bladder (I hate noise) and Nuun doesn't seem to require me to do anything more than flush it out with water occasionally.

Lemon Barley water, very weak, only thing other than water that stops me wanting to chuck up.
Water for thirst, Kendal mint cake for energy.
